The present invention is a liquid crystal display device that includes the following: a first substrate 10 and a second substrate 20 that are disposed to face each other and that have alignment films 15 and 25 provided on the surfaces facing each other, respectively; a sealing member 30 that is located between outer peripheral portions of the first substrate 10 and the second substrate 20 to attach the outer peripheral portions to each other and that forms a hermetically sealed space inside; and a liquid crystal layer encapsulated in the hermetically sealed space. The outer peripheral edges of the alignment films 15 and 25 on the first substrate 10 and the second substrate 20 are located inside the outer peripheral edges of the substrates 10 and 20. In the outer peripheral portion of at least one of the alignment films 15 and 25, notches 15a or 25a are formed. The sealing member 30 is configured to straddle the substrates 10 and 20 and the alignment films 15 and 25, thereby covering the notches 15a and 25a. |
