Preparation of a phosphoric acid aryl ester dichloride compound (I) comprises reacting phosphorus oxychloride and phenol or substituted phenol in the presence a phosphorus compound or a phosphorus oxy compound (III), as a catalyst. Preparation of a phosphoric acid aryl ester dichloride compound of formula (Ar 1>-O-P(=O)(Cl) 2) (I) comprises reacting phosphorus oxychloride and phenol or substituted phenol in the presence a phosphorus compound of formula (P(R 1>)(R 2>)(R 3>)) (II) or a phosphorus oxy compound of formula (P(=O)(R 1>)(R 2>)(R 3>)) (III), as a catalyst. Ar 1> : phenyl optionally substituted by 1-4C-alkyl, 1-4C-alkoxy, halo, OH or nitro; and R 1>-R 3> : alkyl or aryl.
