A seal 8 to seal the periphery of a heating element plate 3 in a liquid heating vessel 1 which has at least one radially extending circumferential fin 11 with a sealing surface which carries least one circumferential rib 12. The rib may improve sealing against imperfect or uneven surfaces. The heating element plate may include a radially outwardly projecting lip into which a groove of the seal fits. The seal may include a radially inwardly extending portion which fits around a flange of the heating element plate.
