PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting a position of a vehicle shaped robot using a light sensor is provided to prevent error about a travel range even when the robot goes up the stairs or uses an elevator. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus and a method for detecting a position of a vehicle shaped robot using a light sensor comprises an inertial sensor(100). The inertial sensor comprises a triaxial acceleration sensor, a triaxial gyro sensor, and a triaxial terrestrial magnetism sensor. An encoder which measures the moving speed and distance of the robot is installed on both sides of the inertial sensor. A processor(102) removes noise and disturbance, and transmits 3D location information when the robot uses stairs and an elevator. A RF modem(103) transmits the location information with a wireless communications method.
