The device has a gear shifting pallet (12) to be actuated behind a steering wheel. A socket body (14) pivotally supports the pallet and comprises a fixing unit for fixing the socket body to a case (20) that is mounted coaxially with a steering column of a vehicle. The fixing unit comprises a support foot (30) integral to the socket body and an actuator (40) fixed at the case. The actuator includes an anchoring slide (46). The slide occupies a retracted inactive position and a deployed position for anchoring the foot to fix with the case.
