An electrolyte assembly includes in sequence a) an anion exchange membrane; b) a porous hydrophilic membrane; and c) a proton exchange membrane. A membrane electrode assembly including the electrolyte assembly described immediately above further includes: a cathode catalyst layer including an electrocatalyst, supported on an electrically conductive porous gas diffusion layer located on a side of the anion exchange membrane opposite the porous hydrophilic membrane; and an anode catalyst layer including an electrocatalyst, supported on an electrically conductive porous gas diffusion layer located on a side of the proton exchange membrane opposite the porous hydrophilic membrane. A fuel cell includes the membrane electrode assembly described immediately above.
