Class 111 Apparatus for separating heavy solids such as grit from liquids, e.g. sewage, comprises two or more parallel settlement channels 11 spanned by a gantry 25 carrying pumps 26 and hinged suction pipes 20 whereby grit is transferred from the bottom of the channels to a washing plant 30 also carried by the gantry; the light organic and other material being discharged from the washing plant 30 through a pipe 49 to a launder 50 running parallel to and discharging downstream of the channels 11. An air compressor 40 mounted on the gantry 25 delivers through a pipe 41 into the washer 30 so as to stir up the grit and blow organic matter to the surface where it flows over a weir 47 into an annular channel 48 which in turn discharges into the launder 50.
