The method involves providing a sensor element (114) having a pumping cell (132) and a Nernst cell (134). A pump current is regulated by the pumping cell using detected voltage of the Nernst cell during measuring operation. The measuring operation is suspended and calibration operation is performed. A pump current through the pump cell is detected as a function of time during calibration mode for detecting extremum pump current. Calibration information is determined from the minimum value of extremum pump current for calibration of the sensor element. An independent claim is included for device for detection of gas component in gas measuring chamber.
