<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maintenance method which can perform a desired cleaning operation, and a liquid ejection device. <P>SOLUTION: It is determined whether or not first cleaning is executed when a signal for discharging liquid from a nozzle after a liquid accumulation part is exchanged, the liquid is discharged from the nozzle when it is determined that the first cleaning has been executed, and the liquid is discharged from the nozzle on the basis of the signal after the first cleaning is executed when it is determined that the first cleaning has not been executed.
