PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for biologically treating ammonia containing wastewater are provided to stably oxidize ammonia components into nitrous acid by supplying the propagation of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for biologically treating ammonia containing wastewater includes a plurality of trickling filtering units(110), a circulating unit(130), and a controller. The trickling filtering units biologically nitrate ammonia components in wastewater based on filtering beds filled with filtering media and drains finally treated water. The trickling filtering units are serially arranged. The circulating unit circulates primarily treated water through one tricking filtering unit to another trickling filtering unit. The controller periodically converts the waste water and the primarily treated water and suppresses the propagation of nitrate-oxidizing bacteria.
