The device (10) has an auxiliary drive unit (28) to drive a generator (20) and the auxiliary units (44,46) of an internal combustion engine (12). The generator is connected with the internal combustion engine through an electrical clutch apparatus. The generator is disconnected from the internal combustion engine, at the time of drive of the auxiliary units by the auxiliary drive unit. A freewheel device is integrated into the electrical clutch apparatus. An independent claim is included for method for operating drive device.
