<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a maintenance method which can perform a desired cleaning operation, and a liquid ejection device. <P>SOLUTION: It is determined whether or not an amount of liquid accumulated in a liquid accumulation part reaches a prescribed amount or larger when a first signal for indicating the execution of second cleaning different from first cleaning is inputted into the liquid ejection device, it is determined whether or not the first cleaning is executed when the amount reaches the prescribed amount or larger, the second cleaning is executed on the basis of the first signal when it is determined that the first cleaning has been executed, and the first cleaning is executed in place of the second cleaning when it is determined that the first cleaning has not been executed.
