Class 80 (2) In a gearless differential, the opposed faces of two driven discs 23, 24, secured to half axles 20, have each two symmetrically-arranged intersecting circular grooves 25a, 26a, and 25b, 26b, and a driving disc 28 arranged between the discs 23, 24 has four radial slots 30, each receiving a slide 37 on the ends of which are journalled quadrants 38a, 38b having ribs slidably engaging the grooves. Two adjacent quadrants 38a engage groove 26a and the other two quadrants 38a engage groove 25a while the corresponding quadrants 38b engage grooves 26b, 25b, and 25b, 26b respectively. Normally, both discs 23, 24 rotate at the same speed as disc 28, but if one disc is restrained from rotation the other disc rotates at twice the speed of disc 28, but there is always a substantial driving torque applied to the restrained member. Each disc 23, 24 may have three or more symmetrically-arranged intersecting grooves instead of two, with the disc 28 having twice that number of slots. It is, however, possible to have the same number of slots as grooves, but this results in an unbalanced arrangement. |
