<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To irradiate a wide illumination area with a sufficient amount of light. <P>SOLUTION: An optical fiber 21 guides light emitted from a light source to an ultrasonic probe 10. A light guide plate 11 guides light from light entry ends, which are optically linked to the optical fiber 21, to light exit ends disposed near an ultrasonic transducer. The light guide plate 11 has a first light guide section including the light entry ends, and a second light guide section including the light exit ends. The first light guide section is formed of glass, and magnifies incident light.
