Provided is a technology that is for detection connection abnormalities of a slave device in a network system having a master device and a slave device. The connection abnormality detection method is in a network system configured from a master device and a plurality of slave devices and in which data from the master device is returned via each slave device. Each slave device has an upstream-side port and a downstream-side port. The connection abnormality detection method has: a step for acquiring topology information of the network system; a port control step for blocking or opening the ports of each slave device in a manner so as to form a series topology with the slave device of interest as the furthest downstream slave device; a step for transmitting inspection data after port control; and a step for detecting connection abnormalities of the devices on the basis of the return status of the inspection data.
