The access and drive authorization system (11) has a portable authentication unit (2) and a vehicle-side driving and access authorization unit that has two communication units (6,7) for communicating with the authentication unit. The storage location of the authentication unit is determined by the former communication unit during fault of communication between the authentication unit and the latter communication unit.
