<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable face detection based various functions to be controlled individually according to scene recognition results. <P>SOLUTION: Information on a photographing scene is acquired as scenes are recognized, and detection is made of the photographing scene at the same time to see if it contains a face. Then various controls are exerted based on a scene recognition result and a face detection result. When various controls making use of face detection, such as face frame display, face AE, face AF, face AWB, face gradation correction, etc., are exerted, those are made individually controllable according to the scene recognition result so that they will suit the need, thus making it possible to realize excellent photographing and image processing according to the scene concerned. Furthermore, if the scene changes, scene recognition is performed based on information about scenes acquired every prescribed cycle.
