<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of accurately controlling the transfer efficiency. <P>SOLUTION: A sensor 71 is attached to a position which satisfies a condition of a distance A<a distance B. The distance A is a distance from a nip part N of a transfer position to a detection position of the sensor 71, and the distance B is a distance from a front end of paper to the end part of the pattern image P, when the sensor 71 detects the density of the pattern image P. The sensor 71 which is attached to the position satisfying the above condition can detect the density of the pattern image P on the paper at least sandwiched in the nip part N, thereby making it possible to detect the density of the pattern image P on the paper whose flaps and change in attitude are suppressed when the paper is conveyed.
