Described is a catalyst composition for catalytic reduction of sulphur compounds contained in a gas stream, wherein said catalyst composition contains aluminium oxide, a group VI metal compound or a group VIII metal compound or metallic components from both group VI metal compounds and group VIII metal compounds, where said catalyst composition has a pore structure such that pores with pore diameter of more than 10000 à account for more than 10% of total pore volume of said catalyst composition and pores with pore diameter less than 70 à account for more than 10% of total pore volume of said catalyst composition.
