The method involves switching on a ventilator (250) of a ventilating apparatus (100) for producing a stream (AS) of exhaust air (AL), and determining room air temperature and fresh air temperature using two temperature sensors (220, 210), respectively. A border humidity is determined from the room air temperature and the fresh air temperature and compared with a measured relative humidity of air in a room. A signal for ventilation of the room is produced, and the ventilator is kept in a switched-on state if the measured relative humidity lies above the border humidity. An independent claim is also included for a ventilating apparatus.
