Classes 64(1) and 123(2) A solid fuel-fired steam or hot-water boiler which is additionally or alternatively heated by gas burnt in a combustion 'chamber or chambers 9 on one or both sides of, or at the rear of or underneath the solid fuel combustion chamber 4, comprises a water jacket 3 which has flues 8 leading from the gas-combustion chamber or chambers 9 to an upper chamber or chambers 10 which connect with the main flue 6 of the solid fuel combustion chamber, a baffler or bafflers arranged as a venturi being incorporated in each upper chamber, adjacent to the flues 8. The baffler comprises two curved plates 26 arranged so that they act as a venturi under down-draught, the flue gases then being discharged through openings 27. The gas supply to the burners is controlled by two thermostats 24, 25, one exposed to the solid-fuel combustion gases and the other to the water in the jacket 3. The part of the thermostat 24 in the chamber 10 has an insulated sleeve. The gas is controlled by a valve 13 in a chamber 15 beneath the ashpit 14.
