An organic electroluminescent device according to the present invention comprises: first and second electrodes, at least one of which is made from a metallic layer; an organic function layer, which is made from an organic material, and which is disposed between the first and second electrodes; and a gap containing layer which is adjacent to the metallic layer and contains a plurality of gaps therewithin.
