An energy management system (1) for an elevator installation (2) coupled to a source of alternative energy (4) integrates various operational modes regarding optimization of energy usage. The energy management system (1) selectively executes these modes depending on at least one predetermined parameter of a variety of parameters. The energy management system (1) has a processor (22) and a switch module (24) coupled to the processor (22) to receive a control signal from the processor (22).
