PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an operating efficiency of an engine by increasing the expansion ratio while preventing the occurrence of problems associated with high compression ratio. SOLUTION: In each of cylinder cycles, when an inlet valve is closed on the advance angle side of the inlet valve closing timing IVC at which a cylinder air-charge quantity becomes maximum at the engine speed N<SB>ENG</SB>, steps S8 and S9 (control of Fig.8 (not shown)) where the inlet valve closing timing IVC is angle-delayed according to the increase of the target air-charge quantity CE which is charged to each of the cylinders 11, and steps S8 and S9 (control of Fig.9 (not shown)) where the pressure within an intake passage is lowered according to a delay angle of the inlet valve closing timing IVC are achieved.
