An engine 13 includes a turbocharger 30, and an intercooler 32. The turbocharger 30 comprises a housing 29 in which is a gas impeller 28 to comprise a gas mixture, and surfaces of the housing and of the impeller 28 that are exposed to the gas are provided with a non-stick coating, preferably a fluorocarbon polymer such as polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE). Upstream of the housing 29 is an injection nozzle 50 so that the impeller 28 can be washed during operation. Preferably the intercooler 32 can be readily dismantled into modules (70, fig.4) for ease of cleaning. These modifications are particularly advantageous when using a fuel gas produced by gasification or pyrolysis.
