发明名称 Process for the production of titanium tetrachloride
摘要
Oxidic titanium raw materials, particularly titanium slags, are chlorinated at, say 1000 DEG -1300 DEG C. as a suspended bed in a gas stream containing carbon monoxide and chlorine. 1-2 volumes carbon monoxide per volume of chlorine are employed depending in part on the iron content of the raw materials. The reaction gases may be diluted with inert gas, e.g. nitrogen or carbon dioxide including the tail gas obtained after condensation of titanium tetrachloride. Phosgene may wholly or partly replace the carbon monoxide-chlorine mixture. Moisture, preferably below 0.1 per cent. by volume, may suitably be present in the reaction gases. The titaniferous material, which may be ground to be from 10-300 mesh may contain magnesium and calcium oxides, which are converted to chlorides and volatilized during the process. These are condensed by cooling to about 300 DEG C. by injection of cold liquid titanium tetrachloride. Ferric chloride is thereafter condensed by cooling to 150 DEG C. by the admixture of cooled recycled chlorination gas, and finally the titanium tetrachloride by washing with cold liquid tetrachloride. Aluminium and silicon chlorides are simultaneously condensed. The carbon monoxide-chlorine mixture may be produced by conducting a mixture of oxygen and chlorine through a hot bed of carbon. The latter, e.g. petroleum coke, should first be freed from water and hydrogen by calcination at 800-1000 DEG C., and it may be treated as a suspended bed. The temperature may be kept at 1000-1100 DEG C. by the addition of carbon dioxide to the oxygen chlorine mixture.
