Described herein is an improved power line communications system (100) in which noise generated by appliances and/or equipment in an end user mains network (150) is better suppressed. A smart metering device (170) in the power line communications system (100), and associated with an end user network (150), includes a notch filter (190) that attenuates noise in the end user network so that it does not interfere with signals being transmitted to and from the smart metering device (150) over the power line communications system (100). A similar notch filter (195) connected across a secondary side (136) of transformer (132) in a power distribution sub-station (130) can be used to attenuate noise from a primary side (134) of the transformer (132).
