Clear aqueous detergent solutions contain 10-40 per cent. by weight (based on the composition) of an organic anionic soapless detergent and not more than 5 per cent. of a cellulose acid sulphate or a salt thereof. The preferred anionic detergent is a sulphated condensation product of 4-9 mols. of ethylene oxide with an alkylphenol or alkylthiophenol in which the alkyl group is a straight or branched chain, saturated or unsaturated group of 8-18 carbon atoms, but alkyl sulphates or sulphonates or alkylaryl sulphonates may also be used, if desired in association with a sulphated ethylene oxide condensation product as above. The anionic detergents may be taken as such or as their alkali-metal, ammonium or amine salts. The preferred cellulose acid sulphates contain 0.51-0.72 sulphuric acid residues per anhydroglucose unit of the cellulose, and may be used as such or as their alkali-metal, ammonium or amine salts. The solutions may also contain (1) a dialkylolamide of a fatty acid of 10-18 carbon atoms, e.g. lauric diethanolamide, (2) an amine, e.g. di- or tri-ethanolamine or morpholine, in an amount sufficient to yield a solution of pH 7-10.5, and (3) a polyethylene glycol, to reduce the tendency of the solution to cloud. A perfume, a dyestuff or a fluorescent whitening agent may also be included. Examples of suitable solutions are given, and U.S.A. Specification 2,539,451 is referred to.
