Driver assistance system for recognizing a turn-off maneuver of a preceding vehicle

A driver assistance system of an observing vehicle 3 uses a method comprising the following steps for recognizing a turn-off maneuver of a vehicle 2 preceding the observing vehicle 3: a) identifying at least one first and one second reference point 5, preferably the rear lights, in pictures of the preceding vehicle 2 taken successively by a cam­era 4, wherein the reference points 5, of the preceding ve­hicle 2, are spaced apart in transverse direction; b) determining the distance dn from the images of the reference points 5 in the pictures; and c) recognizing a turn-off maneuver if it is determined that there is a reduction in distance dn. The distance, D, between the vehicles may also be monitored and a turn-off maneuver is recognized only if the reduction in distance dn between the reference points is more than a possible simultaneous increase in distance, D, between the vehicles.
