<p>Charging apparatus 1 for charging an inductive chargeable device 2 in a charging region 6 comprises a coil 5, charging control means 8 and at least one temperature sensor 9, 10 arranged laterally of and adjacent the coil 5. The sensors can be adjoining the coil, with plural sensors equidistantly spaced in a circle; and in recesses 19 in a plate 7 of the charger housing. The sensors can be surface mounted devices arranged on a circuit board (fig 8, 22) having a circular opening to receive the coil. Inductively chargeable device 2 can also comprise temperature sensors, controller 15 and a chargeable powers source 15 such as a battery 16 and may communicate a signal to the charger controller 8. Measuring and evaluating the temperature at two discrete points in the charging zone allows recognition of a foreign body 18 in the charging zone. Detecting a foreign body can use plural temperature sensors and depend upon a difference in temperature values, a change in temperature over time, a comparison with a reference value and by comparing the temperature at two points to that at a third point.</p> |
