<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for driving droplets of fluid on an active matrix and a method of driving the same. <P>SOLUTION: An active matrix electrowetting on dielectric device which includes a plurality of array elements configured to manipulate one or more droplets of fluid 4 on a matrix. Each of the array elements including a corresponding array element circuit which includes a top substrate electrode 28 and drive electrodes 38A, 38B. Droplets of fluid are positioned between the electrodes. Data are written to the array element by selectively applying to the drive electrode either of the predetermined time-varying voltage waveform V<SB POS="POST">1</SB>or a time-varying voltage waveform V<SB POS="POST">2</SB>being the logical inverse of V<SB POS="POST">1</SB>, and applying to the top substrate electrode the time-varying voltage waveform which represents the sum of the V<SB POS="POST">2</SB>and the predetermined V offset voltage.
