The method involves controlling operation of an internal combustion engine (1) by an engine control device (6). The internal combustion engine is connected to an output unit (2) through a gear transmission system (3). The internal combustion engine is uncoupled from output unit by an internal shifting unit (4) provided in gear transmission system during sail mode. The sail mode is activated if the brake pedal operation amount is smaller than the threshold value.
