<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white light source and illumination apparatus in which pure white illumination is enabled by using a red phosphor having high light emission intensity and high luminance, and a liquid crystal display device having excellent color reproducibility. <P>SOLUTION: A white light source comprises a blue light-emitting diode formed on an element substrate, and a kneaded object which is disposed on the blue light-emitting diode and obtained by kneading a red phosphor and a green phosphor. The red phosphor contains elements A, Eu, Si, Al, O and N in an atomic ratio of a composition formula (1) and further contains C. The element A in the composition formula (1) is at least one of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba.
