<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid-crystalline medium having Δn and Δε values, and rotational viscosity and flow viscosity, each required for a display based on ECB effect and optionally IPS or PALCD effect. <P>SOLUTION: This liquid-crystalline medium is based on a mixture of polar compounds having negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε), and characterized by having a γ<SB POS="POST">1</SB>/Δn<SP POS="POST">2</SP>value in the range of 6-45 Pa s, a clear point exceeding 60°C and Δε of ≤-2.3.
