This planar light emitting device is provided with: an element substrate having both a rectangular plate-form transparent substrate and organic EL element formed on one surface of the transparent substrate; a rectangular plate-form cover substrate; and a connecting unit which is formed in a rectangular shape enclosing the light-emitting portion of the organic EL element on the aforementioned one surface of the transparent substrate and which comprises an adhesive agent which binds the element substrate and the cover substrate. The portion of the connecting unit along a surface of the four side surfaces that is a non-cut surface (not a cutting surface) of the transparent substrate has a wide part that is wider than at other positions.
