Electrode active material has an organic compound as a principal constituent thereof that contains a napthalene imide structure represented by the general formula as a constitutional unit thereof. This napthalene imide structure contains a plurality of substituents=X that are bonded by double bonds. =O is preferable for the substituents=X. It is possible to use an optional substituent for R1-R6, but it is preferable for R5 and/or R6 to be a stable radical. As a result, it is possible to achieve a secondary battery that exhibits high energy density and high output, has a long life, and exhibits favorable cycling properties in that there is little capacity decline even after repeated charging/discharging.
