<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element including a light scattering layer and/or a light diffracting layer for improving the light extraction efficiency, that has overcome the problem of generation of a dark spot or short-circuiting between an anode and a cathode due to the provision of the light scattering layer and/or the light diffracting layer, provide an organic EL element with excellent ITO etchant resistance and resistance against a high-temperature heat treatment step, and provide an organic EL module, an organic EL display device, and an organic EL illumination device including this organic EL element. <P>SOLUTION: An organic electroluminescent element includes a laminate body on a substrate. The laminate body includes a light scattering layer and/or a light diffracting layer, a planarization layer, an anode, a hole injection layer and/or a hole transportation layer, a light-emitting layer, and a cathode in this order. The planarization layer includes a metal oxide film. Each of the hole injection layer and/or the hole transportation layer contains a polymer compound with a weight average molecular weight of 5000 or more as a main component. An organic electroluminescent module includes a plurality of the organic electroluminescent elements arranged in parallel, in which the light-emitting layers included in the organic electroluminescent elements have particular light emission spectra.
