<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mold assembly for manufacturing an improved concrete block. <P>SOLUTION: The mold assembly 30 for manufacturing concrete blocks and which is adapted for use in a concrete block machine. The mold assembly includes at least a first mold cavity 46 in which at least a first liner plate 32 is movable and a plurality of liners 32 that form a drive assembly 550. The drive assembly includes a first drive element 572 having a first end and coupled to the first movable liner plate 32 proximate to a second end, and an actuator assembly 607. The actuator assembly includes the second drive element 607 selectively coupled to the first drive element proximate to the first end.
