The individual filaments of a continuous glass filament strand are coated, prior to their association in the strand, with a liquid carrier having microscopic, discrete cushioning means dispersed therein. The cushioning means may comprise microscopically short fibres such as wood pulp, refined alpha cellulose, asbestos fibres, finely ground paligorskite or glass fibres, microscopically fine gaseous bubbles or a combination of such bubbles and fibres. The liquid carrier may be an aqueous solution of starch, a water-soluble resin, hydroxy ethyl cellulose, gelatin, bone-glue or casein, a wax emulsion or latex or the fibres may be applied to the filaments in an aqueous dispersion which sets about the filaments in the manner of the setting of paper pulp. The gas bubbles may be obtained by dispersing calcium carbonate within the liquid and evolving carbon dioxide by acid action before or after coating the filaments, or the gas may be dissolved in the liquid and the bubbles formed by heat treatment or supersonic vibration. |
