Class 120(iii) Continuous artificial filaments 4 are cut into short lengths (e.g. to form staple fibres or brush stock) by holding them in contact with the projections on a moving support 1, Fig. 1 and pressing the edge of at least one knife blade against a part of the filaments bridging the gap 2 between adjacent projections, the radius of the edge of the blade from its axis of rotation varying along the length of the blade so that when it is rotated in synchronism with the movements of the support 1 to cut through the filaments the point of contact between the blade and filaments moves in the same direction as the filaments. A tow of filaments 4 is held in a circumferential groove 10 in the wheel 1 by resilient fingers 13, Fig. 3, engaging slots 5 in the wheel 1 at, and to either side of, the cutting zone which is bounded by a and b in Fig. 1. The fingers are carried by a wheel 11 rotated by its shaft 12 which is inclined to the axis 3 of the wheel 1. The latter may be lined, wholly or partly, in the groove 10 with rubber or the like. The knife blades 6, 7, Fig. 2, which have sloping edges, are secured to a carrier 8 or formed integrally therewith, the carrier being rotated by its shaft 9 so that the thin end of the blade 6 starts a cutting operation at a as the thick end of the blade 7 is finishing a cut in the position b. The cutting position of the blades moves from a to b during the cutting operation. The carrier 8 may support, a single blade curled through more than 360 degrees, and the gaps 2 may be wider at the bottom than the top in order to clear the blade. The blades may also be arranged so as not to cut in every gap 2. |
