A furnace chamber has a bi-directional electro-magnetic induction unit 24 mounted to an inclined lower wall 18 for inducing flow in molten material in an access port 16. A retractable channel plate assembly 26 can be positioned in the port 16 to give an extraction flow channel 28 for the molten material. A drive arrangement 64 moves the channel plate assembly 26 into and out of the port 16 controlled by a control system 74 with a sensor 78 (e.g. using a laser) for measuring the level of the molten material in the port and a feedback system indicating the position of the channel plate assembly. A method of operating the apparatus also involves stirring the molten material with electro-magnetic induction unit 24 in one direction, and extracting with the unit 24 in the reverse direction. |
