A detergent composition is made from a mixture of stearic acid, a sulphonated fatty oil, sodium silicate, caustic soda, a secondary alkyl sulphate and water, the respective proportions being such as to result in a fatty acid content within the range of 4 to 19 per cent. Potassium silicate and caustic potash may replace the sodium compounds. Optional ingredients may include a sulphated fatty alcohol, a filler such as kaolin or talc, and a perfume such as pine oil. The sulphonated fatty oil may comprise sulphonated castor oil (Turkey red oil) used as the sodium or ammonium salt. The secondary alkyl sulphate preferably comprises an aqueous solution of a secondary alkyl sodium sulphate in which the alkyl group contains 10 to 20 carbon atoms. In preparing the composition, the mixture is heated in a jacketed pan up to, but not exceeding, 195 DEG F. The mass is then poured directly into trays or other cooling receptacles and, after setting, cut or stamped into bars or tablets. |
