Extraction of ingredients, preferably lipids and lipoid substances, from biological material comprises a pre-treating step, which makes the ingredient more available for extraction, and an extracting step in which the ingredients are extracted in an organic solvent comprising a single phase solvent mixture, where addition of an aqueous sample divides the reaction mixture into two phases and the ingredients are detected in the organic solvent phase. Independent claims are included for: (1) an analysis unit, for performing the extraction process, comprising a pre-treatment kit and an extraction kit, where both the kits contain solvent or solvent mixture depending upon the biological material and the substance to be analyzed; and (2) a spectrophotometer, preferably hand photometer, for measuring the ingredients of biological materials in transparent plastic container forming the extraction kit, comprising adjusting the beam of the photometer so that the measurement of the upper half of the vessel is detected. |
