A mobile telecommunications device is installed within a vehicle and configured to log driving information associated with the vehicle when driven. The mobile device is programmed to register the start of a driving period during which the mobile device is installed to the vehicle and the vehicle is being driven by a driver. The mobile device is also programmed to process sensor data during the driving period to derive driving information associated with how the vehicle is driven and to store a selection of the driving information to a memory. The sensor data may be from one or more of a camera, a positional sensor (GPS), an acceleration sensor and an audio sensor. The start of a driving period may be automatically triggered when the sensor data collected by the device matches predefined values or thresholds. For example, the recording operation may be initiated, and the start of a journey recorded, when it is detected that the speed of the device exceeds 20 km/hr. The device may be able to detect events, such as a crash, and record and transmit event-related data to a remote system. The telecommunications device is used instead of a single-purpose driving information recorder, reducing cost. |
