FUSION SPLICER AND FUSION SPLICING METHOD FOR OPTICAL FIBERS

PURPOSE: An optical fiber fusion splicing apparatus and method are provided to improve reliability of optical fiber fusion splicing by performing the optical fiber fusion contact which is fitted to original characteristics of each optical fiber through accurate discrimination of the kind of optical fiber. CONSTITUTION: An optical fiber fusion splicing apparatus(400) comprises a light source part(410), a photographing part(420), an optical fiber discriminating part(430), and a fusion splicing part(440). The light source part comprises a plurality of light sources in which wavelength is different. The photographing part takes a photograph of a longitudinal cross section of optical fiber according to each wavelength provided from the plurality of light sources. The optical fiber discriminating part extracts a brightness distribution curve of the longitudinal cross section of the optical fiber for each wavelength from a recorded image. The optical fiber discriminating part distinguishes the kind of the optical fiber by comparing the brightness distribution curve for different wavelength. The fusion splicing part splices the optical fiber by differently applying a fusion method according to the kind of the optical fiber.
