This invention relates to an optical volumetric storage method and the apparatus designed based on this method. More particularly, this invention relates to an optical volumetric storage method utilizing multiple beams with different wavelengths and encoded intensities to create groups of multiple tiny plane or quasi-plane Bragg reflector like structures superposed in a small volume of the optical storage medium as the storage cells. The apparatus based on this method makes a single disk have high storage capacity, which exceeds the Blu-ray disk. Furthermore, unlike other proposed volumetric storage technologies, this method has no interactions of the write and read beams with undesired data layers, has no data write quality losses due to disk rotation, and has good compatibility with existing CD, DVD and even Blu-ray drive technologies.
