<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition which does not lose initial adhesion and heat-resistant adhesion to a metallic reinforcing material such as a steel cord, has an adhesion durability that is not likely to reduce its adhesive strength even after a long time of use, and is excellent in aging resistance, and to provide a belt coating rubber and a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition. <P>SOLUTION: The rubber composition includes a rubber component and vapor-grown carbon fibers having an average length of 0.5 to 30 μm and an average diameter of 0.04 to 0.4 μm, and the composition is used for a coating rubber for covering a metal reinforcing material of rubber goods. The belt coating rubber is prepared by using the rubber composition. The pneumatic tire has a carcass composed of one or more carcass plies and a belt composed of two or more belt layers disposed on the outside in the tire radius direction of the carcass, wherein the belt includes a layer composed of a steel cord covered with a coating rubber.
