<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To identify a switching hub to which a communication terminal accommodated in a network under control of a router is to be connected, without imposing excessive load on the network. <P>SOLUTION: An adjacent repeating device table about a router and about each switching hub under control of the router is stored beforehand. The router refers to a MAC address table to identify a communication port corresponding to a terminal to be searched for, and refers to an adjacent repeating device table of the local device to identify a switching hub corresponding to the communication port. Next, the router inquires the switching hub about a communication port corresponding to the terminal as a candidate to be connected to, and refers to the stored content of the adjacent repeating device table of the switching hub to determine whether the destination for the communication port to be connected is some other switching hub.
