<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce assembly cost of a semiconductor optical switch module. <P>SOLUTION: Optical waveguides 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 made of an InGaAsP material are formed on an InP substrate 1, and electrodes 7, 8, and 9 are provided on the optical waveguides 2, 3, and 4, respectively. By controlling a current made to flow in the electrodes 7, 8, and 9, an optical switch operation and an optical amplification operation are achieved. The linear optical waveguides 2 and 3 and the curved optical waveguide 5 form a U-shaped optical waveguide, and the linear optical waveguides 3 and 4 and the curved optical waveguide 6 form another U-shaped optical waveguide. Combination of the two U-shaped optical waveguides provides a W-shaped optical waveguide network. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
