In a window comprising a number of sashes 16, 18... 22 pivoting about horizontal axes in the same vertical plane, the sashes being operated by a common operator such as a Bowden-wire 72, it is arranged that the lowest sash 16 is unlocked and partially opened before the higher sashes are unlocked and begin to open, this procedure being reversed on closing. The end of the Bowdenwire remote from its operating handle is secured to a channel member 30 slidable vertically on guides in the hollow jamb 28. The member 30 carries members 52, one for each sash, each of which forms a half of a latching member the other portions 56 of which are carried by the sides of the sashes. Downward movement of the slides 30 releases the catches in sequence, the lowest catch first. The slides 30 are also formed with slots 40, of different lengths, in which the pivots 42 of the sashes can slide. Quadrants 60 struck about centres 42 are carried by the sides of the sashes and are formed with recesses 66 forming shoulders 64 against which ribs 68 on the sliders abut when the sashes are closed. The sashes are stayed by members 46 hinged on fixed pivots 50.
